100 Common Idioms Cards
Description / 100 Common Idioms Cards
Start taking your students’ language skills to the next level with idioms.
As you know, idioms are phrases whose meanings are different to the literal translation of the words in the phrase, like ‘straight from the horse’s mouth’ and ‘raining cats and dogs’. Since children are still developing their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills, it’s important to be extra careful when teaching idioms.
Luckily, these cards take much of the work out of teaching these tricky turns of phrases. All of the cards are double-sided, with a literal illustration of the idiom on both sides. One side has the idiom, whilst the other has the meaning of the idiom and an example sentence using it.
There’s also a number at the top right of each card indicating the frequency of the idiom - the lower the number, the more common it is.
Features
- The frequency of the idiom is indicated at the top right corner of the card
- Colourful illustrations to make the idioms more memorable
- Idioms are carefully deconstructed using child-friendly definitions and example sentences
Activity Ideas
- Before flipping over the cards, ask the students to guess what the idioms mean
- Ask the children to construct their own sentences using the featured idioms
- Ask children if they have similar idioms in their culture
