Alien Word Cards
Description / Alien Word Cards
Being able to break down words is a valuable skill for children. It helps them find common patterns in words, deduce meaning and pronunciation, and learn other foundational skills essential for higher order linguistic thinking as they advance in their studies.
For that reason, many of the Alien Word Cards contain nonsensical words like ‘jat’ and ‘snay’. Through the use of lines and sound buttons below each letter (or set of letters), children can practise identifying blends, digraphs and the like.
And if they’re having a bit of trouble with the decoding process, they can always look at the cute alien pictures for inspiration and motivation!
Features
- Colourful alien pictures
- Seemingly nonsensical words with decoding symbols underneath
- Helps children practise how to break down words into their components
Play Learning Ideas
- On a separate piece of paper, let the children write down the nonsensical words, and what type of word or pattern they’re seeing. For example, ‘tas’ is an example of a CVC word, albeit a nonexistent one (at least, not as a common noun).
- For a more lighthearted activity, ask the children to give the aliens names. Encourage them to be as creative and silly as they can be.
