Being able to break down words is a valuable skill for children. It helps them find common patterns in words, deduce meaning and pronunciation, and learn other foundational skills essential for higher order linguistic thinking as they advance in their studies.

Play Learning Ideas

• On a separate piece of paper, let the children write down the nonsensical words, and what type of word or pattern they’re seeing. For example, ‘tas’ is an example of a CVC word, albeit a nonexistent one (at least, not as a common noun).
• For a more lighthearted activity, ask the children to give the aliens names. Encourage them to be as creative and silly as they can be.
