High Frequency Word Cards
Description / High Frequency Word Cards
These cards feature high frequency English words suitable for children in their early primary years.
The cards are double-sided. One side has the word with colour-coded sound buttons, and the other has blank squares designed to help children write out the word.
The cards can be used as classic flashcards, or they can be used as supplementary test tools where children have to guess what word fills out the blank squares.
Features
- Double-sided cards
- Colour-coded according to developmental progression
- Colour-coded sound buttons
Play Learning Ideas
- Use the cards as flashcards
- For more advanced students, the cards can be used to teach the parts of speech. For example, what part of speech is ‘a’ and ‘went’? (Answer: ‘article’ and ‘verb’ - past tense of ‘go’, respectively).
- For the cards that use contractions, ask the students to identify the two words being contracted together. For example, ‘it’s’ is a contraction of the word pair ‘it is’.
- Use the sound buttons on each card to teach the students how to sound out that word, and how to pronounce other words with similar sound buttons.
- For the blanked-out boxes behind each card, a more out-of-the-box approach may be necessary. For instance, the boxes that house ‘day’ can also house ‘dog’. Ask students to think of words that can fit those boxes other than the ones provided.
