The brightly coloured orange pieces are arranged in singular 1cm³ units, fused ‘longs’, ‘flats’ and large cube (10cm³). Modular indentations on the fused shapes makes it easier for students to understand how many units make up the whole, which is highly applicable when teaching place value. Having a physical representation of this, that they can manipulate and compare with other pieces, further enhances their understanding. For example, 10 single unit cubes clearly make up one ‘long’.
