Engaging in tricky topics

A system like MAB is perfect for engaging students in topics they may find challenging. A practical resource that children can pick up and manipulate alongside other pieces helps them to make connections between the ideas being taught. When used in conjunction with MAB longs, flats and cubes, these MAB units are a key component of engaging base ten block assessments.

MAB ‘Longs’ form a component of the base ten system, whereby ten single units form one long, and ten longs form one ‘flat’. With use alongside the units, flats, and cube, it’s possible to explain place value in a clear and accessible format. However, longs could also be applied to teach addition, subtraction, counting, and basic number sense using multiples of ten.
