MAB ‘Longs’ represent the ‘ten place’ of the base ten system, whereby ten single units form one long, and ten longs form one ‘flat’. With use alongside the units, flats, and cube, it’s possible to explain place value in a clear and accessible format. However, longs could also be applied to teach addition, subtraction, counting, and basic number sense using multiples of ten.

Practical and hard-wearing

Bright orange, easy-to-clean, and made from smooth plastic, the pieces can withstand frequent use in the classroom. Each long has indents at regular intervals to make clear that they’re made up of ten equal parts. The longs are fused and therefore cannot be dismantled. All 200 supplied are uniform in size, shape, and colour.

Engaging in tricky topics

It’s easier for children to see the connections between units when they’re provided a practical resource like this one. Being able to manipulate the pieces to solve tasks will engage them with the concepts, whilst also allowing them to practise fine motor skills.
