Maths charts provide a bird’s eye view of a specific set of data points related to maths. They could be general number charts that showcase multiplication, place value, rounding and more.

They don’t have to look boring, though. With some creativity and gumption, you can transform maths charts into fun teaching tools.

Activity Ideas:

  • Pattern recognition. Use the maths charts as is, and have the students point out any patterns they see on the chart. (For example, all of the numbers in one column end with the first one-digit number at the top.)
  • Spot the sum. Using the maths charts as is, show patterns in the way students can arrive at sums using the chart. For example, if ‘4’ plus ‘14’ equals ‘18’ and ‘4’ plus ‘24’ equals ‘28’, what is ‘4’ plus ‘34’ based on the positions of the sums in the prior problems? (Answer: ‘38’)
  • Breaking (number) borders. Cut up the Number Line Wall Border chart into cards, and have students perform arithmetic operations using those cards.
