As their name suggests, Multibase Arithmetic Blocks (MABs) are designed to help children hone their arithmetic skills. Whether they’re learning addition (one block plus another block equals 2) or multiplication (2 sets of blocks with 3 pieces each result in a total of 6 blocks), these blocks give a nice visual representation of these concepts in action.

MABs can be made of wood or plastic. Wood has a better visual appeal, but plastic has greater durability. Make sure to account for these differences when choosing which type of block to use in class.

Activity Ideas:

  • Making MABs. Using MABs, students can construct any 3D shape they want.
  • Maths with MABs. True to their name, MABs can be used to demonstrate a variety of arithmetic operations. You can manipulate them to show addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Base Ten Activities. Take inspiration from Dr. Paul Swan’s ‘Base Ten Blocks Book’ for more ideas on using MABs in a classroom setting.
