Abacus offers a variety of products aimed at helping Year 1 students master level-appropriate maths concepts. Our Year 1 maths resources are designed to supplement Year 1 maths learning materials as recommended by the Australian curriculum.

Year 1 maths skills

Count from zero to 100

Students will feel confident counting from zero to 100 in order, out of order and in any sequence. They will also be able to perform simple addition and subtraction using these numbers.

Use units of measurement

Students will be able to use informal units of measurement to compare and contrast the length, weight and other quantifiable differences between objects. They will understand that, for this comparison to work, the units of measurement should be uniform.

Describe halves

Students will be able to recognise halves as two parts of a whole. They will learn to split objects into two equal parts, and describe these parts using level-appropriate vocabulary.

Value money

Students will be able to assign value to Australian coins. They will order them according to their respective values, perform simple operations using these coins, etc.

Describe duration

Students will comprehend the concept of duration in everyday situations. They will be able to understand what is being asked with questions such as, ‘How long is the class going to take?’

Understand the concept of ‘chance’

Students will have a basic understanding of the likelihood of an event happening. They will incorporate words such as ‘probably’, ‘possibly’, ‘likely’, etc. into their everyday vocabulary.

Year 1 maths activities

Forming fractions

Fractions are arguably among the most intimidating maths concepts for students to master. Fortunately, this activity can help make the learning (and teaching) of this particular concept much easier.

Students can use a variety of objects to help them visualise fractions, such as dominoes, dice and building blocks. You could give them randomised sets of these objects, then ask them to write down what specific fractions they’re seeing.

For example, if you give them a domino where one half has one dot and the other has two, they will be able to identify the fraction as ‘1/2' or ‘one-half’. Similarly, if you stack two dice on top of each other, and the top dice shows ‘1’ while the bottom shows ‘2’, the answer should be the same as above.

Money mayhem

The goal of this activity is to reinforce your students’ understanding of Australian coins and their value. The difficulty level of this game can be adjusted depending on your students’ skill level.

You do not need to use real Australian currency for this activity. You could lay down play coins and ask students to identify the number on the face of the coins. You could also place two or more coins together, and ask them to perform simple operations (e.g. ‘What is the sum of two one-dollar coins?’).
