Abacus features a variety of Year 3 maths resources designed to make classroom learning more engaging. Our maths resources for Year 3 supplement the standard learning materials laid out by the Australian curriculum.

Year 3 maths skills

Count up to 10,000

Students will be able to count, order and perform operations on numbers up to 10,000. In addition, they will be able to understand the relationship between addition and subtraction in complex equations.

Use number sequences to perform multiplication

Students will master basic multiplication tables to allow them to perform the related operation quickly. They will know how to use a calculator to multiply and divide numbers more efficiently.

Understand the relationship between dollars and cents

Students will apply the principles of addition and subtraction to count change. They will also learn how to round change to the nearest five cents, and have a basic understanding of how various countries’ denominations work.

Use formal units of measurement

From informal units of measurement, students will progress to the metric system. They will know how to use and interpret centimetres, kilograms, litres and the like.

Describe variations in probabilities

Students will now develop the technical vocabulary to describe probabilities. They will conduct repeated chance experiments to observe and understand variations in their results.

Multiplication games

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to help students think of multiplication in more concrete terms. For example, Multiplication Bingo is (as its name suggests) modelled after the game bingo, except instead of just calling out numbers, products/multiplicands/multipliers will be called instead.

If you prefer something more basic, you could also use multiplication dominoes or multiplication cards. They don’t quite have the urgency that Multiplication Bingo does, but they’re still fun ways to help students visualise multiplication in action.

Probabilities and possibilities

‘Probabilities’ can seem esoteric unless students see it in action, which is where probability chance experiments come in. The beauty of these is that they can cover just about anything that involves chance.

If you’d like to make these experiments more interesting, you could take a leaf out of a book of chance experiments aimed at Year 3 students. The necessary tools are often readily available, such as coins, cards, dice and spinners. Once the experiments are done, ask your students to record the results, observe variations and patterns, and describe these in class.
