Statistics and probability are some of the most challenging maths concepts your students will ever encounter, even at the higher levels of their education. That’s why it’s essential to make them comfortable with these concepts as early as possible.

Ease them into the world of chance (as seen through a maths lens) with objects that students associate with fun, such as playing cards, dice and spinners. Encourage them to perform experiments as simple as a coin toss, and as complex as throwing multiple dice and calculating the chances of certain outcomes occurring.

Activity Ideas:

  • It’s a toss-up. Students will roll one or more dice, and guess the numbers that will appear on the dice.
  • Spin your stars. Students will spin a spinner, making guesses as to what it’ll point to.
  • Swan’s statistics activities. Grab a copy of Dr. Paul Swan’s ‘School Friendly Cards’ book, and see what other games you can use with playing cards.
