A times table is a succinct visual representation of the relationships between multiplicands, multipliers and their products. When students master these tables, mental multiplication becomes significantly easier.

Paired with carefully crafted products, these tables make maths seem like a more accessible and interesting subject than it is popularly portrayed to be. Students understand that multiplication is essentially a much more efficient form of addition, and that these numerical patterns occur not only in their maths textbooks, but also in real world situations.

Activity Ideas:

  • Bursting bubbles. In this activity, students use the Times Table Bubble Board to learn multiplication and master related maths techniques. They must press the bubble corresponding to the correct answer of a multiplication problem. For example, if they’re asked to find the product of ‘6’ and ‘4’, they must quickly pop the bubble(s) with ‘24’ on them
  • Multiplication bingo. As the name suggests, this is a bingo game with a multiplication twist. Specifically, multiplication problems will be called out instead of numbers, and players have to encircle the solution to those multiplication problems on their board as quickly as possible.
  • Tackling tables with Dr. Swan. Grab a copy of Dr. Paul Swan’s ‘Tackling Tables’ book, pick an activity or two from there, and get your students excited about the next maths class!
