Dr. Paul Swan’s Pattern Blocks are modelled after Chinese tangram puzzles, wherein a set of seven blocks (shaped like various polygons) are arranged such that they collectively form an image like a crown, an animal, an abstract figure, etc.

They’re similar to jigsaw puzzles, in that the shape and colour of the blocks help players pinpoint where to put them on the board. At the same time, the blocks’ double-sided design encourages students to think outside the box by identifying all possible places where they can put the blocks.

Hands-on learning

You can have your students play this like a jigsaw puzzle, wherein they fill in the blank spaces with the appropriate blocks. Alternatively, you can get their creative juices flowing by having them form any kind of shape they want using the coloured blocks. You’d be surprised at what young minds can come up with!
