Description / Potato Clock
Using potatoes and electrodes, students can generate enough electricity to power a digital clock.
Build your Potato Clock
As absurd as that sounds, this particular phenomena has a scientific basis. Essentially, the acid inside the potato reacts with the two metals that serve as the negative electrode (anode) and positive electrode (cathode), generating energy.
For best results, use potatoes that have been boiled for 8 minutes. This process breaks down the tissues inside the potato that can interfere with the energy flowing inside it.
This experiment can also work with tomatoes, lemons, and apples.
