The kit comprises a solar cell, compatible leads, and mini motor. When the components have been connected, exposing the solar cell to sunlight will cause the mini motor to spring into life.

The electric motor is small and low consumption, and the fan is made from tough plastic. The mounted solar cell comprises a selenium photo-voltaic cell. Both components come in a vibrant blue, with the sockets coloured red and black to clearly relate them to the corresponding leads.

Durable components

The components are solid and well made. Both the solar cell and motor are mounted on weighty metallic bases, making them suitable for use outdoors.

Demonstrate to students how the motor runs directly from the output of the solar cell, illustrating the conversion of light energy to electrical and ultimately mechanical. With the clearly colour-coded pieces, they can then practise matching the leads with the sockets to make the fan turn.
